The Pizza Hut Lesson
Born in the United States, son of a prominent surgeon, Jeff journeyed to New Zealand in 1983 when his mother re-married, to a New Zealander. Soon after arriving Jeff dropped out of school and started washing dishes in a Pizza Hut restaurant. Seeing great enthusiasm and work ethic he was promoted to the management team, and within 5 years was the youngest manager in Australasia.
“In hind sight it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I was pushed out of my comfort zone.” says Jeff.
Reality sunk in after presenting a cost saving idea to this large restaurant chain, that saved the company $3 million dollars a year. He received a $500 bonus that was his wake up call, he realised that he was no more valuable to the company than the oven, a tool to make the company money. That’s the day Jeff fired his boss and vowed to never, ever work for anyone else again. Soon after he started his own catering business.
Jeff’s first business was a failure, leaving him $70,000 in debt, with 3 children under five, and seemingly no way out.
“We were living week to week in one of the worst neighborhood in Auckland, with our kids sleeping on mattresses on the floor and banana boxes for their clothes. We had an old Honda with a leaky sunroof and mushrooms growing in the damp carpet.”
Moving back to the USA for a while Jeff’s first wife, a nurse, found an opportunity with a revolutionary new product by accident. Skeptical at first Jeff’s goal was simply to earn enough income to be able to be a stay at home dad. Although it wasn’t easy and there were many obsticles, Jeff went on to far exceed his expectations and made his first million by age 31.
With the financial success came downtimes in both his personal life and business. Jeff’s can-do attitude however saw him through a few tough years and out the other side.
